In 2020 when the pandemic hit and Benjamin was finishing her thesis on the Hydrodynamics of Surfboard she found herself spending hours at Almar Surf Works learning shaping and resin work from Michel Junod and Jon Henderson (Strive Surfboards). The fusion of mathematics, surfing and snowboarding blend together in Benjamin’s unique perspective of approaching the water and the crafts she creates. Since then, Benjamin has spent the years as head glasser and resin worker at Almar where she was given the nickname “The Laminatrix.”

Natasha Benjamin
Natasha Benjamin is a marine scientist and filmmaker dedicated to protecting and restoring the world’s oceans. Based in Northern California, she has spent more than two decades working at the intersection of ocean conservation, storytelling, and communications. A lifelong ocean lover — surfer, diver, and advocate — Natasha brings both scientific expertise and personal passion to her work.
As a producer for the Peabody Award–winning Brick City TV series, she has seen firsthand how powerful storytelling can shift perspectives and spark change. Her filmmaking includes the award-winning documentary Sequoias of the Sea, which reveals the dramatic collapse of Northern California’s kelp forests and the urgent efforts to restore them.
In her role as Associate Director of Blue Frontier, Natasha helps lead national efforts to grow and strengthen the ocean conservation movement. She works on ocean-climate policy, builds partnerships across organizations, supports grassroots and youth leaders, and develops campaigns that bring critical ocean issues into the public spotlight. She is also helping spearhead Blue Frontier’s upcoming KELP (Kelp Education Learning Program) Campaign, a global media and public-awareness initiative positioning kelp as “the new coral” and elevating the urgency of kelp forest recovery worldwide
