OTL #10 - Surf photographer Dave "Nelly" Nelson

We got to interview of one of the world's best surf photographers, Dave "Nelly" Nelson. We discussed his career as a photographer, his adventures including his recent trip to Teahuppo Tahiti where he photographed the biggest waves seen there in over 50 years, including the biggest barrels surfed by both a man and a woman.

Also, returning for a another appearance was Matt "Rocky" Rockhold who discussed how being photographed by Nelly put his surfing career on the map!

OTL #9 - Mayor Hilary Bryant

We discussed all that has occurred on her "watch" including the shooting tragic shooting deaths of two Santa Cruz Police Officers. The situation of the homeless, the needles, the increase in crime, and the state of Cowells Beach, and why it continues to be the on the top 10 dirtiest beaches list in the State. We asked her also of course about her love for surfing.

OTL #8 - Dr. Doug Hetzler and Tom Powers

Interviewed Surfer's Ear Specialist Dr. Doug Hetler, whose non-invasive surgery to relieve surfers ear has had surfers from all over the world come to his office in Santa Cruz for his surgical method that is far less painful than the traditional method.

Also West side surfer Tom Powers discussed the before and after of the surgery that he received from Dr. Hetzler.

OTL #7 -Hunter Joslin, Rocky Snyder and Connor Wells

 Interview with Indo Board inventor Hunter Joslin, and how the Indo Board is a popular tool for professional surfers.

Well known Santa Cruz personal trainer Rocky Snyder, on how he uses the Indo Board at his gym, and we spoke about his book "Fit to Surf" and we got some tips on workouts for surfers.

Connor Wells who works for Santa Cruz Skateboards, and who is organizing downhill skateboard race at Pike's Peak in Colorado. Downhill Skateboard racing is making a popular comeback after being shelved for many years.


OTL #6 - Big wave surfers Shawn Dollar and Tyler Fox

Shawn Dollar just prior to him winning a total of $30,000 at the 2013 Billabong XXL Awards, along with an entry into the Guinness Book of World records for paddling into a 61 foot wave at Cortes Bank.... We spoke about that wave, and how he survived it once it caught up to him and engulfed him.

Tyler Fox, we spoke his 7 year wait to finally be able to surf in the 2013 Mavericks Invitational Competition as well as his successful website, SantaCruzWaves.com

 

OTL #5 - Ken "Skindog" Collins

Interviewed big wave surfer and activist Ken "Skindog" Collins, about tales of his surfing career, particularly his search for big waves and the biggest barrels. His experience at Mavericks, and Puerto Escondido where caught the biggest barrel of his life, that won him a Billabong XXL award for biggest barrel of the year.

Also we spoke extensively about his role as a public safety activist and controversial figure, in taking on the Santa Cruz City Council and the need for change to clean up his hometown of Santa Cruz.

 

OTL #4 - Brothers Matt and Luke Rockhold

We spoke to Matt about his professional surfing career, competing in the "Air Show Series" as a Freak-uent Flyer! .... and his recent signing with Team O'Neill as one of their Ambassadors, as well as being one of the most liked and well respected surfers in Santa Cruz.

Luke Rockhold is also a well accomplished surfer, but he came on to the show to talk about his career as an MMA fighter and his then upcoming fight in Brazil versus Vitor Balfort.

 

OTL #3 - ASP Surf Tour "Rookie of the Year" Nat Young

Talked to professional surfer Nat Young who just returned from Bells Beach Australia, where he took 2nd place in the final of ASP World Championship Tour, coming away with a check for $30,000 and putting him in a strong position for Rookie of the Year.

We also spoke of growing up in Santa Cruz, who he looked up to for a mentor, his training regimen, and life on the World Tour.

 

OTL #2 - Anthony Ruffo and Sheriff Sergeant Steve Gagnon

Anthony Ruffo, one of Santa Cruz's most controversial surfing figures, had just been released from Rountree Jail in Watsonville a few months prior to the show. In one of the photos you can see the electric monitoring bracelet that he was wearing, that actually went off during our show.

Ruffo who had been caught up in Methamphetamine dealings was jailed for one year, and the warden of the jail where he was housed at was overseen by Sheriff Steve Gagnon, who grew up with Ruffo, and who helped him change his life, worked on his education and life after his jail time.

The day after the show, he was fully paroled and his ankle monitoring bracelet was removed.
